Can someone share their Simply Piano app review?

I’m considering using the Simply Piano app to learn piano, but before I start, I want to know if it’s worth it. Have you tried this app? What do you think about the lessons and overall experience? Any feedback would help me decide whether it’s a good option. Thanks!

I gave Simply Piano a whirl a few months ago, mostly out of desperation to make sense of the dust-gathering keyboard haunting my living room. It’s… okay? Like, it’s got this clean, colorful interface that feels inviting, especially if you’re new to piano and want something straightforward. It’s kinda gamified, so it pushes you to progress, which is cool — you get this little dopamine rush when you ‘level up.’ BUT (and it’s a big but), it’s not perfect.

Lessons start super easy, like Mary Had a Little Lamb-level, which is fine if you’re absolutely starting from scratch. But the pace feels… uneven. One second it’s holding your hand, the next it’s hurling you into songs that feel way too advanced. Also, the app pretty much requires you to stick to their order. Want to skip ahead and play a song you’re actually excited about? Nope. You’re stuck grinding through the beginner stuff until you unlock it.

Another issue? It’s not great at correcting technique. Sure, it listens to what you play and checks if you hit the right notes, but the app won’t call you out on sloppy finger positioning or bad habits. If you’re not careful, you might train yourself wrong, and unlearning that later is such a hassle.

Also… price. The free trial is nice, but the full membership isn’t exactly cheap. There’s better value in other apps or even free YouTube tutorials — IF you’re disciplined enough to organize your learning.

So, in the end, it’s decent for dipping your toes into piano, especially if you like guided structures. But if you’re semi-serious about learning, pairing it with real lessons or other resources is probably smarter. To put it another way: it’s a decent start, but it’s not gonna make you a piano virtuoso overnight.

Simply Piano? Meh, it’s a mixed bag. I tried it when I thought this was the year I’d stop playing Chopsticks and actually learn to play. It’s okay for casual learners who want to say, “I can play a song!” after three lessons. The app looks nice and all, super friendly interface, and the gamification? Yeah, it tricks your brain into feeling accomplished. But long-term? Nah, not it.

Here’s the deal: like @himmelsjager pointed out, the lessons are VERY linear. Super beginner-focused, which works if you’ve never touched a piano in your life. But if you’ve got even the slightest idea of what middle C is, it starts to get… sort of boring before throwing you into things you’re wildly unprepared for. Plus, the app doesn’t care about your laziness—no skipping lessons to jump to the fun songs. Wanna learn that viral TikTok tune everyone’s sick of hearing? Tough. Stick with Hot Cross Buns first.

And don’t get me started on technique. It’s like, “Great, you hit the note!” but doesn’t care if your hands are doing some awkward crab claw thing. That’s where a human teacher or better resources would slap your fingers (figuratively).

Don’t love the cost either. For the price, there are other apps that are more flexible, like flowkey, or even just going down the bottomless YouTube rabbit hole for free (yes, free!). But if structure motivates you and you’re a total newbie, give it a try. Just manage your expectations—it’s not turning you into Beethoven anytime soon.
